Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)

Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) therapy is a fascinating protocol that stimulates the natural immune reactions of the body to deal with certain kinds of illnesses, it is very safe, very low risk and has been shown to have a wide range of benefits. Certain conditions have a strong evidence base for using Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) in clinical trials and laboratory research. These include autoimmune illnesses (e.g. multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s and rheumatoid arthritis), chronic illnesses (e.g. fibromyalgia, Parkinson's disease, autism and AIDS) plus certain cancers (e.g. pancreatic, colon, brain, head/neck, breast and ovarian cancers).

How a little known generic drug - Low Dose Naltrexone - Could revolutionise treatment for autoimmune disease, cancer and many more.

How does LDN work?

Naltrexone is actually a type of medication that blocks the natural hormones in the body called endorphins. People usually know of endorphins as the happy hormones produced when we feel good and they can also reduce feelings of pain.

Doctors usually use naltrexone in order to block certain drugs that act like endorphins, e.g. opium, morphine and heroin. Therefore, naltrexone can be useful for these types of drug overdose. For these purposes naltrexone is a licensed drug usually prescribed in doses of 50 to 300mg daily.

Low Dose Naltrexone Trevor Gunn and Dr Kam Mann

Dr Bernard Bihari in 1985 noticed that by giving a very low dose of naltrexone (LDN) from 0.5 to 4.5mg daily and at a certain time of day, blocking the receptors results in the body REACTING by producing more endorphins later that day.

You‘re using the dose homeopathically. You‘re using it NOT for the effect that the medicine has on the person, but for the body‘s reaction to the medicine.

Dr Kamu B. Kokayi

Homeopathic remedies ...

Homeopathic remedies are often mistakenly conceived of, as being only ultra-dilute remedies that have no material substance in them. BUT in fact many homeopathic remedies are saturated tinctures, i.e. highly concentrated solutions, there are also more dilute homeopathic remedies but with plenty of original substance e.g. tissue salts and low potency remedies, and of course there are topical creams and lotions containing material extracts of herbs, plants, salts etc. all of which are homeopathic.

What makes a remedy homeopathic is NOT the level of dilution but the fact that it is prescribed to stimulate the secondary reaction of the patient to the substances in the remedy. Just as with this example of naltrexone, the primary action of naltrexone is to block endorphin receptors the secondary re-action is a surge of endorphins produced by the body. This is the homeopathic principle applied to one small issue.

This surge of endorphins stimulates and regulates many of the systems of the body, as though we have created a natural physiological feeling of well-being. As many of us know, this is a powerful healing state to be in and many conditions appear to respond to LDN.

The endorphin/opioid receptor system influenced by LDN is present in almost every biological system. These systems regulate immune response as well as regulating cell growth (including cancer cell growth). This potentially creates a wide application for the use of LDN.

It strengthens the body‘s own defenses. Rather than directly attacking, the way antibiotics attack bacteria, or the way chemotherapy tries to attack cancer cells, or the way anti-viral drugs attack viruses

LDN Pioneer - Dr Bernard Bihari

Research scientists are looking into the effects of LDN and as more and more people are being treated, the exact mechanisms are slowly being elucidated.

Naltrexone has approval for use in higher doses but there is no specific licence for its use in low dose. Naltrexone is also way beyond its patent life, so there is little to be gained by the pharmaceutical industry in putting LDN through the expensive and laborious regulatory process to obtain a specific licence for use in low dose. LDN is legitimately being used by doctors around the world and the prescription is known as ‘off-label’.

LDN and the speKTrum approach to healthcare

Importantly, the use of LDN opens up an approach to treating illness that accommodates the fact that the human body REACTS intelligently to its environment. Often in illness, the body is responding to its environment and rather than needing drugs to suppress symptoms, the body needs therapeutic interventions to help those reactions. This is consistent with the speKTrum approach to healthcare and the use of LDN.

It's a different model of understanding the body -- how it works and how disease works. I think eventually there will be changes in the paradigm of the way we think about diseases

LDN Pioneer - Dr Bernard Bihari

So, the human body REACTS to its environment in many different ways, including reacting to therapy and medication. In assessing symptoms of disease we need to be aware of what the body is reacting to, i.e. what are the root causes of disease. To successfully treat disease we need to understand when to stimulate responses and when to suppress them.
